Third Annual Mutant Mouse Necropsy and Pathology Workshop
Scope/Topic
Jul 25, 2013 - Jul 26, 2013 The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor ME
Each summer, for the past 54 years, The Jackson Laboratory and Johns Hopkins University host the annual Short Course on Medical and Experimental Mammalian Genetics, held during the last two weeks of July. As a part of this course, the Mouse Clinic is offered. This is a unique exhibition of over 150 mutant mice and their controls demonstrated and discussed by the principal investigators who are actively working with them. This alone is a valuable and unique opportunity for pathology residents and pathologists interested in learning about mutant mice, many of which are used in toxicology studies, to actually see and learn about a large number of such mice with a great diversity of diseases in one afternoon in one location. We have carried this one step further. As these mice are demonstrated outside the barrier facility and cannot be returned, rather that euthanizing the mice and discarding them, they are moved into a quarantine facility and made available for workup by up to 7 pathologists/pathology residents under the supervision of two senior pathologists and their highly experienced technicians.
By keeping the workshop small, focused, and inexpensive (only costs are travel, room, and board; no registration fee) with an unparalleled mutant mouse resource to investigate, a great deal of hands-on experience can be obtained in understanding how to work with and interpret mutant mouse pathology.

Schedule
Jul 25, 2013 - Jul 26, 2013 The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor ME
This two day workshop begins with discussions on approaches to necropsy, computerized colony management and phenotyping record keeping systems, and hands on training using the Mouse Genome Informatics and Mouse Tumor Biology Databases. The small group size allows for additional topics to be selected to address specific educational needs or special interests of the participants. A list of mice on exhibit is provided to the participants in advance and, if available, mutant mice of interest to the participants not on the list may be provided as well. The afternoon is spent going from table to table to see the mutant mice and their littermate controls demonstrated by the scientists at The Jackson Laboratory who work with and often times discovered or created them. As each investigator usually works on one group of mice, such as skin and adnexal mutants in the Sundberg laboratory, a group of related or key mutants in the field will be demonstrated together for comparison. This provides the pathologists with the PI’s perspective.
On Friday, after entering the quarantine facility, the pathologists will have access to all mice from the previous day’s clinic. Equipment and fixatives are provided as well as expert supervision by two trained technicians and two senior mouse pathologists (Dr. Sundberg and a volunteer from another institution). After overnight fixation the tissues are packaged in double layers of seal-a-meal bags in water for shipment. Participant may use these samples for control materials, slides for teaching sets, primary data for comparison to ongoing investigations including supplemental material for Ph.D. theses, or even to populate other comparative pathology databases.
Registration
Jul 25, 2013 - Jul 26, 2013 The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor ME
There is no registration fees to attend this workshop. Attendees are responsible for their own travel, room and board to the event.
If you wish to attend this two day workshop, please contact the Workshop Coordinator, Erin McDevitt; or Workshop Organizer; John Sundberg.
Hotel/Travel
Jul 25, 2013 - Jul 26, 2013 The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor ME
Attendees are responsible for booking their own travel and lodging for the workshop.
As The Jackson Laboratory is located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, half of the island being Acadia National Park, evenings were spent having barbeques and boiled lobsters near the beach. This idyllic setting provides a relaxed atmosphere for the attendees to get to know the senior pathologists and each other as well as to discuss their own research projects and diagnostic dilemmas.
