21st Annual Short Course on Experimental Models of Human Cancer

The Jackson Laboratory presents this graduate-level genetics course for predoctoral and postdoctoral students as well as established investigators entering the field of mouse genetics. The course focuses on the mouse as an experimental tool in cancer research.
Workshops will include: mouse genome informatics, laboratory animal biomethods (optional), gross pathology, necropsy and tumor histo-pathology. The intensive course offers a mix of formal lectures, discussion groups, demonstrations, workshops and tutorials. The course is held in a retreat-like setting and is limited to 35 participants to ensure a supportive learning atmosphere with exceptional interaction between students and faculty.

- Strategies in induced mutagenesis
- Bio-informatics in genetics and genomics
- Development, growth control and malignancy
- Mouse models for cancer research
Poster Session
There will be a poster session at which presentations by attendees are strongly encouraged. If you are interested in presenting a poster, please prepare a one page abstract to be compiled with others in booklet form for the course. Abstracts must fit on one side of an 8 1/2 x 11" page with 1" margins. It should have a title and author line. The attending author's name must be underlined. Abstracts of your poster presentation should be submitted in a pdf file or Word document as an E-mail attachment. Abstract sbmission deadline is July 15, 2012

Registration Fee: $1500.00
The registration fee includes course materials, meals and shared lodging at The Highseas Conference Center.
Placement is limited to 35, so early application is advised.

A limited number of scholarships are available to help attendees with travel expenses. Please indicate on your application form if you are requesting a scholarship. Scholarship applications must include a letter of recommendation from your supervisor or mentor that indicates your finanical need. All scholarship recipients must submit an abstract and present a poster during the course. Scholarship Requests deadline is July 1, 2012

All students and some faculty reside together at Highseas Conference Center, a spacious mansion built in 1912, overlooking the entrance to Frenchman Bay and adjacent to beautiful Acadia National Park. The retreat setting and dormitory style housing, consisting of shared bedrooms and bathrooms. Highseas promotes an interactive environment that sets this course apart from all others. Meals are prepared by our resident chef. Wireless internet access and laundry facilities are available on site.

Air
Bar Harbor is served by two airports:
- Hancock County/Bar Harbor Airport (BHB)
- Bangor Airport (BGR)
New visa rules by the U.S. State Department now in effect beginning in August 2008, visitors traveling to the U.S. from visa waiver countries (i.e. Europe, Japan, Australia, etc.) will have to register online 3 days in advance of travel.
Car
Bar Harbor is approximately 6 hours by car from the greater Boston area.
