Phenotyping Mouse Models of Human Lung Disease

This hands-on workshop will cover lung mechanics and techniques for measuring function in mice and how mouse models may be used to study human pulmonary biology and disease. After an initial day of basic mouse genetics, nomenclature, caging and breeding strategies, anesthesia and surgical techniques, the workshop quickly focuses on models of lung disease, pathology, lung mechanics and imaging. Laboratory sessions covering airway responsiveness, airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), lung volumes and PV curves, morphometry, sampling techniques and mouse lung pathology will be held in the afternoons.Organizers

We are pleased to announce we have no increase in registration fees this year!
Registration fees: $1,500 or $1,200.00 for students (requires proof of enrollment in an accredited degree program, or postdoc training, or medical internship.)
The registration fee includes workshop materials, meals and lodging at Highseas Conference Center during the workshop.

- Have your mentor or supervisor send a letter of recomendaton via email to Nancy Place. (This step is only required of students, post docs and residents.)

*Free out-of-print books about the laboratory mouse are available online. If you are not familiiar with mouse anatomy you might find the advance reading helpful.

Participants and some faculty reside together at Highseas Conference Center, a Georgian style mansion built in 1912. Highseas is perched on the cliffs overlooking the entrance to Frenchman Bay and surrounded by beautiful Acadia National Park. This is casual, dormitory-style housing consisting of shared bedrooms and bathrooms (minimum double occupancy, some triple and quad rooms). Wireless internet access is provided throughout the building. Laundry facilities are available on site.
You should plan to arrive at Highseas on September 20th any time after 12:00 noon, and depart on September 24th in the evening or on the morning of September 25th.

Bar Harbor is served by two airports:
- Hancock County/Bar Harbor Airport (BHB)
- Bangor Airport (BGR)
New visa rules by the U.S. State Department now in effect beginning in August 2008, visitors traveling to the U.S. from visa waiver countries (i.e. Europe, Japan, Australia, etc.) will have to register online 3 days in advance of travel.
