This course provides training in the theory and practice of maintaining mouse colonies for production and research. This program is designed for scientists, colony managers, animal care technicians and students requiring an understanding of issues relating to the management of animal research and production colonies.

Topics include:

  • Mouse genetics
  • Gene and strain nomenclature
  • Breeding strategies
  • Genetic background effects on phenotype
  • Reproductive biology of the laboratory mouse
  • Using assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs)
  • Cryopreservation
  • Colony health
  • Importation
  • Recovering from disease outbreaks
  • Production colony construction and maintenance
  • Nutrition
  • Genetic quality control
  • Public resources for mouse researchers
  • Cre-LOX Technology in Mouse Models of Disease 
  • JAX Colony Management System (JCMS) Computer Software

A three-day version of this four-day colony management course is also being offered at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgis, June 11-13.

Course meets the requirements for 21 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize the AAVSB RACE approval; participants should be aware, however, that some boards have limitations on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and/or restrictions on certain methods of delivery of continuing education.

This workshop is now full.  Space remains available in the three-day version of this colony management workshop being offered at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgis, June 11-13.

Enrollment is limited to 40 selected from applications. All items must be submitted before an acceptance decision can be made. Applications will be reviewed until the workshop is full.

To complete your application to attend, please:

- Complete the on-line application form.

- Send a brief curriculum vitae, 2 page maximum by email attachment to Nancy Place;

- Have your mentor or supervisor send a letter of recommendation via email to Nancy Place (this step is only required if you do not hold a doctoral degree).

Applications by women and minorities in the life sciences are strongly encouraged.

Accepted applicants will be provided with registration information and lodging options.

We are pleased to announce no increase in the registration fees this year:
$1,200, $1,000 students (proof of student or post-doc status required with registration payment)

The fee includes lectures, materials, meals and shared dormitory style lodging at Highseas Conference Center. Should registrant desire single room accomodations, they must stay offsite and transport themself to the course.  No reduction in registration fee can be made for offsite lodging. Student status requires enrollment in an accredited degree program, postdoc training, or medical internship.

Free out-of-print books about the laboratory mouse provided online. If you are not familiiar with mouse genetics or anatomy you might find the advance reading helpful.

Lodging at Highseas Conference Center is included in the registration fee. Highseas is a spacious mansion perched on the cliffs overlooking the entrance to Frenchman's Bay and offers casual dormitory-style housing with shared bedrooms and bathrooms. Highseas cannot accomodate families, offsite lodging opportunities can be found at the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce.

Air

Bar Harbor is served by two airports:

New visa rules by the U.S. State Department now in effect beginning in August 2008, visitors traveling to the U.S. from visa waiver countries (i.e. Europe, Japan, Australia, etc.) will have to register online 3 days in advance of travel.

Bar Harbor is approximately 6 hours by car from the greater Boston area.
