Genetic Basis of Work-Related Disease: Science and Policy

Scope/Topic

This meeting will bring together scientists, policymakers, ethicists and occupational health professionals to discuss the genetics of occupational disease, how genetic information might be used to predict work-related disease risk and what legal and ethical issues surround the use of genetic information in the workplace. Morning sessions will focus on the science behind genetics of asthma and assessing risk in workplace environments, highlighting some of the more common exposure hazards. Afternoon sessions will consider ethics and policy from government, industry and public health perspectives.

Poster Session

There will be a poster session at which presentations by attendees are encouraged. If you are interested in presenting a poster, please prepare a one page abstract to be compiled with others in booklet form for the course. Abstracts must fit on one side of an 8 1/2 x 11" page with 1" margins. The attending author's name must be underlined. Abstracts of your poster presentation should be submitted in a pdf file or Word document as an E-mail attachment no later than August 11, 2008.

For planning purposes, the meeting will begin with an informal reception on the evening of September 2 with scientific lectures and case studies tentatively scheduled for the mornings of September 3 and 4, with the afternoons being devoted to ethics and policy discussions.

After discussions on September 3, there will be formal poster session.
